I designed and handmade each of these jewelry pieces using beads that were handcrafted in the Acholi Quarter in Uganda. I purchased these beads from “Project Have Hope” while on a mission trip to install solar lighting in remote villages. “Project Have Hope” educates women and helps them establish sustainable business opportunities to support their families. Previously these women worked in a rock quarry as a means of financial support and earned pennies per day. The beads are made of paper from a local printing press and from old calendars and flyers. The paper is rolled into beads and then dipped in clear varnish for sheen, hardness, and durability.
